Inventor-entrepreneur with project leadership experience in multiple poverty alleviation ventures. Effectively integrates the three dimensions of technical feasibility, financial viability and cultural desirability to create holistic solutions for addressing water and energy needs in developing communities.
Inventor of a low-cost air-water generator (US patent 8523980) which uses only renewable energy resources to provide drinking water for developing countries. Co-inventor of a bicycle retro-fit wheel (US patent pending) which uses pedal power to desalinate brackish water into drinking water for developing countries. Inventor of an algae-driven and solar-powered sanitation and recycling system for developing countries.
Adept at analyzing market opportunities, developing business plans, and cultivating partners for launching social innovation ventures. Partners with whom Javier has collaborated in past ventures include IDEO, frog design, Stanford University's Institute of Design, My India Empowered and Genesis Advanced Technology.
Co-developer of Inventor's Village, a versatile and collaborative problem-solving framework for use by technical experts as well as novices. Co-developer of Invent and Innovate, a curriculum for creative problem-solving (http://javierfernandezhan.wix.com/invent-and-innovate-program). Both Inventor's Village and Invent and Innovate are based on Javier's Mundane Model of Creativity, which offers practical tools to make creativity and innovation accessible by the general population.

Conrad Foundation’s “Spirit of Innovation” Award contest: first place winner for designing the ACWa System, an invention for creating affordable clean drinking water for developing countries. ACWa condenses clean water from humid air using only wind, solar and geothermal energy. The patent-pending ACWa was also selected to receive commercialization support from the Conrad Foundation through its Portal program. Article here.
